Book a must for every traveler

"Grandma Jean's Rainy Day Recipes," Recipes compiled by Irma Jean McPherren, Edited by Kristina Yoshida McMorris (Self-published; 2000; spiral-bound trade paperback; 234 pages; $15; no ISBN).

Many of us have fond memories of our grandmother's cooking. We might even ask for a recipe. But Kristina Yoshida McMorris took that next step — she not only got the recipes, she published them.

This book was originally a Christmas present from McMorris to her Grandma Jean, but then it was decided to publish it. All proceeds, in keeping with Grandma Jean's volunteer work, go to the food bank.

After a short biography of Irma Jean McPherren (who lives in Washington state), the book gets down to business. There are more than 400 recipes here, in just about every niche of American cooking.

Nothing is arcane or old fashioned. The ingredient lists often include such items as Cheese Whiz, Minute Rice, canned soups, etc. These are dishes designed for people who cook for their own families in their own kitchen.
